Where’s Your Focus?

How Fixing Your Eyes on Jesus Changes Everything

Life is full of distractions. From the endless scroll of social media to the pressures of work, relationships, and personal ambitions, it’s easy to lose focus. But when life feels overwhelming, Hebrews 12:2 offers a profound solution:

“Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith”

What does it mean to “look unto Jesus” - to fix your eyes on Him, and how can we practically live this out daily?

Let’s explore this transformative call and discover how it can anchor us in every season of life.

What Does It Mean to Fix Your Eyes on Jesus?

Fixing your eyes on Jesus is more than just acknowledging Him—it’s about actively centring your heart and mind on Him every day. Though we can’t see Him physically, we know He is real and present. It’s a deliberate choice to turn away from life’s distractions and focus the eyes of your heart on Him.

As the hymn reminds us, “Turn your eyes upon Jesus, and the things of earth will grow strangely dim in the light of His glory and grace.”

Many of us, like Peter, may claim to belong to God and promise to stay close. But true focus on Jesus isn’t just about words—it’s about a heart of trust and surrender. It’s choosing to turn toward Him, no matter what’s happening around you.

When storms rage, when life feels overwhelming, or when others misunderstand or mock you, fixing your eyes on Jesus means standing firm. It means staying in prayer, renewing your mind through His Word, and prioritizing Him above all else—even when it doesn’t make sense to others.

It’s an act of faith, much like when the Israelites looked at the bronze serpent to be healed (Numbers 21:8-9). They trusted God’s instruction, even when it seemed illogical.

Today, Jesus is lifted up for us. If you want true salvation, healing, direction, and peace amid life’s chaos, you must look to Him. No matter what challenges you face or what others say, keep your focus on Jesus. That’s where hope, strength, and transformation begin.

Why Fix Your Eyes on Jesus?

a. He Is Our Anchor
When Peter walked on water (Matthew 14:29–31), he succeeded as long as he kept his eyes on Jesus. The moment he focused on the wind and waves, he began to sink. Fixing our eyes on Jesus keeps us steady, no matter the storms around us.

b. He Is Our Example
Jesus endured the cross because He saw the joy set before Him (Hebrews 12:2). His life teaches us perseverance, faith, and the importance of staying connected to the Father.

c. He Is Our Source of Strength
When we focus on Him, we draw from His strength, not our own. As Philippians 4:13 reminds us, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

How to Fix Your Eyes on Jesus

a. Through the Word
The Bible is the clearest way to know Jesus and understand His heart. Regularly meditating on Scripture aligns your mind and spirit with Him.

b. Through Prayer and Worship
Prayer isn’t just about asking for things—it’s about communion with Jesus. Worship shifts our perspective from our problems to His greatness.

c. By Cutting Out Distractions
Sometimes, fixing your eyes on Jesus means intentionally stepping away from distractions—social media, toxic relationships, or anything pulling you away from Him.

d. Through Fellowship
Surround yourself with people who inspire and encourage your walk with Christ. As Proverbs 27:17 says, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.”

What Happens When You Fix Your Eyes on Jesus

a. Peace Replaces Fear
Isaiah 26:3 promises, “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.” Keeping your focus on Jesus calms life’s anxieties. Like Daniel in the lion’s den, you’ll experience a deep, unshakable peace that defies circumstances.

b. You See Things from His Perspective
When your eyes are on Him, you see your challenges, victories, and life itself through His lens. This perspective fuels gratitude, hope, and purpose. Just as Moses received detailed instructions for the Tabernacle by spending time in God’s presence, God will reveal His plans for your life when you fix your eyes on Him.

c. You’re Transformed
The more you look to Jesus, the more you become like Him. “And we all… are being transformed into His image with ever-increasing glory” (2 Corinthians 3:18). As you’re transformed, you become a reflection of Christ’s light in a dark world. As Matthew 5:14 says, “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.” Your life becomes a beacon of hope, holiness, and guidance to others.

Fixing your eyes on Jesus isn’t a one-time act—it’s a daily decision. Life will always have storms and distractions, but the key to walking in victory is keeping your focus on the One who holds it all.

Action Point: Take a moment today to realign your focus. What’s distracting you from Jesus? Lay it at His feet and ask for His help to stay focused on Him.
